Article, Friday, 18 November 2011, Foggy Furze Folk Club

If you’ve been to the Foggy Furze Folk Club, held at the Atheneum Club in Church Street, Hartlepool, over the last two weeks, you’ll know how much fun we’ve been having.  A week gone Tuesday we were well entertained by Trev Reed with a wonderful mix of traditional, modern, comedic and downright heart-wrenching music, peppered with some silly but funny jokes.

This week we were visited by a lot of old friends and the night turned skittish and giggly but all in all it was good, clean fun.

Our next guest night at the FFFC is Tuesday, 13 December 2011.

The Headland Folk Club takes place tonight at the Cosmopolitan and your MC Barrie Archer will be there to greet you for the evening.  It’s been decided that another Irish night will be the form at some point before Christmas so we’ll keep you up to date about when that will be.

Skyran are hosting an open-mike night over at the Woodcutter next Saturday, 26 November 2011 and you’re invited to join them for what promises to be a lovely evening.  They’re becoming quite good at hosting these events and they’re always fun so get yourself there.

All the local clubs are sorting out their entertainments for Christmas, the Nursery, the FFFC and Skyran among them so we’ll keep you updated on those events.  If you want an excellent evening’s entertainment it’ll only cost you an inflation-busting £1 on a singaround night or £2 on a guest evening.  If you want to get in touch, you can contact me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 4 November 2011

Lots going on in your locality this last fortnight and for the next two weeks.  Up at the Atheneum in Church Street, the home of the Foggy Furze Folk Club, we’ve had a lovely couple of weeks with loads of great music, had an informal ‘workshop’ evening and are now looking forward to being entertained next week by Trev Reed of of the folk group  Few Broth with lots of lovely folkie tunes and some excellent guitar work.  Trev plays on Tuesday, 8 November 2011 and it’s only £2 for a great night’s entertainment over at the FFFC.

Over at the Headland Folk Club tonight, in the Cosmopolitan, we’re going to have a bit of a shindig with loads of tunes in either D or G.  If you’ve got the time, we’ve got the diddly, diddly music to which you can tap your feet.

In the Nursery they’ve been having good nights one after the other with an open mike night a couple of Saturdays ago and a fun evening for Hallowe’en last Monday with local bands, raffles and lovely food laid on.  Thanks, guys, you’re doing a cracking job.

Everyone is now practising like mad all their songs for Christmas so you’re guaranteed a treat once the season kicks in.

So, pop down to your local folk club and see how it goes.  At the FFFC you only pay £1 on a singaround night or £2 for a guest night.  You know you’ll be made welcome, so why not pop across and watch Trev Reed

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 21 October 2011

Over at the Foggy Furze Folk Club, at the Atheneum Club in Church Street, Hartlepool, we were mightily entertained by Hilary Blythe and Bob Hall back on 11 October 2011.  There was lots of boggie-ing and woogie-ing and some real old blues stuff which I’m sure went back to Bessie Smith, one of the first recorded jazz/blues voices.  Some excellent tunes and we can recommend Hilary and Bob to any other blues or boogie woogie lovers out there.       Our next guest is Trev Reed, who hails from north of the Tyne, and he shall be entertaining us on Tuesday, 8 November 2011.

This Friday, 21 October 2011, is Headland Folk Club night so get yourselves across to the Cos for an evening of song and fun with all your friends.

This Saturday, 22 October 2011, there is an evening’s entertainment, led by Skyran but with others taking part, over at the Nursery in Hopp street, Hartlepool.  This will be a cracking night, these ones led by Skyran are always a good fun night.  And don’t forget the Nursery also plays host to the Pools Folk and Acoustic Club each Monday for your delectation and delight.

You can stay in touch with the folkie goings-on on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or chat to me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  It’s only £1 on a singaround over at the FFFC or £2 for our guest nights and you’re welcome all over town.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 7 October 2011

The Foggy Furze Folk Club went on the second leg of an exchange one Wednesday, up the A19 to the Berkley Tavern in Whitley Bay.  What a wonderful evening we all had.  We received a wonderful welcome and repaid them with songs and music in abundance.  And we got cake too!  The star of the evening had to be John Detain on his accordion who, I’m sure, still has them convinced he only speaks French!           Our next guests on 11 October 2011 are Hilary Blythe and Bob Hall.  They’ve been described as having the hottest boogie woogie piano on the circuit.  Bob plays piano and Hilary plays bass.  Should be foot stomping.  Can’t wait.  And it’s only £2

Now the nights are drawing in, one of the most sociable places to be on a Friday is the Cosmopolitan pub on the headland where Barrie Archer waits with a warm welcome at the Headland Folk Club.  Get yourself over there tonight, 7 October 2011, where Barrie will be pleased to greet you.

And don’t forget the Nursery Inn.  Every Monday evening you’re invited to the Pools Folk and Acoustic Club night.    You’ll always be made welcome so why not stay in touch with the folkie goings-on on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or chat to me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  It’s only £1 on a singaround over at the FFFC or £2 for our guest nights.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 23 September 2011    -   Another splendid guest night was enjoyed by all present, when our very own  local band, “On The Edge”, entertained us with a constant stream of classic and upbeat numbers, that had everyone singing along.  Guitars, a bass, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, penny whistles and shakers all contributed to make each song their own.  The one that really hit the spot was their take on a “Show of Hands” number, “Cousin Jack”.  Well done, guys and gal!

Make a note in your diary for our next Guest Night on 11 October 2011 with Hilary Blythe and Bob Hall. comment From Ian The Bob Hall Show consists of Bob on piano and vocals, and Hilary Blythe on bass and vocals “Britain’s leading blues and boogie woogie pianist” Yorkshire Post

This week the FFFC is taking a minibus of about 14 of us on a club swap to the Berkley Taverners at Whitley Bay.  This is a return visit as they came to the Foggy Furze Folk Club in the Atheneum Club in Church Street back in July.  That was a smashing musical night when we made some new friends.  It’s all very exciting and we’ll have a report for that for you in our next article. Just to let you know, it’s Headland Folk Club night over at the Cosmopolitan this evening, 23 September 2011, where Barrie will be pleased to greet you.

So stay in touch with the folkie goings-on on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or chat to me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  It’s only £1 on a singaround over at the FFFC or £2 for our guest nights.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 9 September 2011

I think every female member of the FFFC is still swooning after our mini-guest spot last week.  Brian Lewis lived up to musical expectations and finished the evening with James Taylor’s ‘You’re my Best Friend’.  Soft velvety voice, charismatic presence, totally understated, completely entertaining.   Our next guests over at the club, held in the Athenaeum, Church Street, Hartlepool, will be On the Edge, a local, upcoming, 4-piece band who play an eclectic selection of new, old, known and unknown for the entertainment of their audience.  They play next Tuesday, 13 September 2011, only £2 entry. Don’t forget to head for the Cosmopolitan this evening, Friday, 17 September 2011.  The summer break is over and we’re all ready for the new season at the Headland Folk Club.  Barrie will be there to welcome you and introduce the singing.                   There’s music over at the nursery each Monday with the Pools Folk and Acoustic Club and Skyran are to play over at Whitby Pirate Day on the bandstand at 4.00 pm on 17 September 2011.                It’s only £1 for a singaround night at the Foggy Furze Folk Club or £2 on a guest night and you’re always welcome.  We start at 8.30 each Tuesday.  To keep up to date with events why not check out our web site on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or get in touch with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 26 August 2011

Lots going on again this fortnight with people all over the place with holidays and such like and this brings in people on their holidays who come to see what the Hartlepool folk clubs are like. Over at the Foggy Furze folk Club, held in the Atheneum Club in Church Street, Hartlepool, we’ve had lots of visitors over the last few weeks from Scotland and the East Midlands, one of whom is so good we’re giving him a spot next Tuesday, 30 August 2011.  His name is Brian Lewis and he has an excellent folk repertoire with a lovely baritone/bass voice and a skilled hand on the guitar.  Get yourself along, it’s pure velvet and an extra treat.

The band playing in our usual monthly spot is On the Edge, playing on 13 September 2011.  They’re really practising hard, they tell us, so should be a session with an eclectic mix of sounds, rounding up with a foot-stomping finish.

Don’t forget there’ll be music on over at the Fisherman’s Arms this weekend as an accompaniment to their Second Beer Festival.  They’ve got loads of different cask ales and, I’m reliably informed, even two cask ciders.  Could be a lot of sore heads this weekend. So much to see and do, you won’t know where to turn.  Don’t forget it’s only £1 on a singaround night at the FFFC and £2 for a guest night.  Keep in touch on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or get in touch with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 29 July 2011

Folk season is in full swing now with festivals cropping up all over the place.  In the next two or three weeks you can visit Staithes or Saltburn, Wantage, Cambridge or Cropredy and any number of other towns far and wide and catch the folkies at play.  It’s all just fun in the sun.

If you want a preview of what Saltburn Festival has to offer, we’re playing host to Cliff Healey on Tuesday, 9th August 2011.  Cliff does folk and country with equal aplomb and his laid back style and superior technique will have you cheering.  A lovely singer with lovely songs, so get along with your £2 to see him at the Foggy Furze Folk Club in the Athenaeum in Church Street, Hartlepool.

Tonight is the Headland Folk Club night over at the Cosmopolitan and Barrie will be there to welcome you in as your host.  Get in early for a seat and enjoy a bit of craic before it all starts.

The Nursery still plays host to the Hartlepool Folk and Acoustic Club each Monday and they’re enjoying themselves, just a-picking and a-grinning.  Why not go and join them.

Skyran are hosting one of their great evenings over at the Woodcutter in Kingsley Avenue on Saturday, 6 August 2011 so get along there and help them celebrate their evening as well.

You’ve got lots to do, all over town so we’d best let you get started on it.  Don’t forget, FFFC is £1 for singarounds, £2 for guest nights.  You can get in touch through our website at www.foggyfurzefolk.com or chat with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  And you’re always welcome in a folk club.
