Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 29 July 2011

Folk season is in full swing now with festivals cropping up all over the place.  In the next two or three weeks you can visit Staithes or Saltburn, Wantage, Cambridge or Cropredy and any number of other towns far and wide and catch the folkies at play.  It’s all just fun in the sun.

If you want a preview of what Saltburn Festival has to offer, we’re playing host to Cliff Healey on Tuesday, 9th August 2011.  Cliff does folk and country with equal aplomb and his laid back style and superior technique will have you cheering.  A lovely singer with lovely songs, so get along with your £2 to see him at the Foggy Furze Folk Club in the Athenaeum in Church Street, Hartlepool.

Tonight is the Headland Folk Club night over at the Cosmopolitan and Barrie will be there to welcome you in as your host.  Get in early for a seat and enjoy a bit of craic before it all starts.

The Nursery still plays host to the Hartlepool Folk and Acoustic Club each Monday and they’re enjoying themselves, just a-picking and a-grinning.  Why not go and join them.

Skyran are hosting one of their great evenings over at the Woodcutter in Kingsley Avenue on Saturday, 6 August 2011 so get along there and help them celebrate their evening as well.

You’ve got lots to do, all over town so we’d best let you get started on it.  Don’t forget, FFFC is £1 for singarounds, £2 for guest nights.  You can get in touch through our website at www.foggyfurzefolk.com or chat with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  And you’re always welcome in a folk club.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 15 July 2011

Hope you’ve got loads of get up and go cos there’s so much going on in Hartlepool you’re going to need it.

Over at the Foggy Furze Folk Club, we were roundly entertained by 2/3 of the Monkey Moonshine Band.  Whilst it was a different set to that planned, they carried it off with aplomb and carried the audience with them.  Might be worth considering doing that set more often – it certainly had everyone joining in.

The next guest to be at the FFFC is to be Cliff Healey who will play on Tuesday, 9 August 2011.

The Headland Folk Club is on this Friday, over at the Cosmopolitan.  It was a great evening last time so come along and help it repeat  itself.  You’re always made welcome.

Now the Nursery Inn isn’t open this Monday, 18th, but is back online on Monday, 25 July 2011 so get down there and enjoy a great night.

Skyran are next taking part in an event in support of Hartlepool & District Hospice on Saturday, 23 July 2011.  This is supported by Hornseys and Surfside over on the promenade at Seaton Carew and a further guest is J B Butterfield.

So don’t forget, fun down at the FFFC in the Atheneum Club in Church Street every week at 8.30 pm, only £1 on a singaround night, £2 for a guest night.  Performers and visitors always welcome.

Lots of stuff starting to happen on the folk front as people start to gear up to the new season.  New songs for sets getting their fine tuning and everyone coming down with summer colds just two days before a gig.  That’s life. Over at the Foggy Furze Folk Club, held at the Athenaeum Club in Church Street, Hartlepool, with its shiny new stairs, they are playing host to Skyran, a local group with a broad base of song genres, some excellent instrumentation and lovely sounds next Tuesday, 14 June 2011.  It’s only £2 on a guest night so why not come along.  Barrie Archer is hosting the Headland Folk Club next Friday, 17 June 2011, over in the Cosmopolitan on the Headland and he hopes you’ll join him there for a rousing singaround.  There is a lot of musical stuff going on at the moment over on the headland and it’s all for joining in.  Go one, get yourself along.  The Pools Folk and Acoustic Club still holds regular evenings on a Monday and you will always be made welcome there. Wednesday night at the Fisherman’s Arms is becoming a regular folkie event.

Don’t forget you’re welcome at any of the venues and most of them celebrate good ale at a reasonable price.  The FFFC is held each Tuesday evening, from 8.30 pm and is £1 on a singaround night, £2 on a guest night.  See you there.

Article, Friday, 20 May 2011

What a fortnight we’ve had in the folk world – visitors from all over the world, songs of pirates and emigrations, fund raisers and – wait for it – the new craze – bug racing.

At the Foggy Furze Folk Club at the Atheneum in Church Street, Hartlepool, we played host to Dave Gibb, a superlative Scottish performer and this week we were visited by new friends from Australia.  What a cracking jam session we’ve had this week.  Shame you missed it.

The next guests at the FFFC are Skyran and they will play for us on Tuesday, 14 June 2011.

Word of warning – the FFFC is taking a small break on Tuesday, 31 May 2011 and this is only because the Athenaeum must close for several days.

The Woodcutter played host to several of your local bands last Saturday and the patrons raised a wonderful £250 in aid of the RNLI.  This was partly raised by means of watching several little mechanical bugs buzz about.  They are so funny.

We have been told Martin Nesbitt will be playing at the Nursery Inn on Monday, 30 May 2011 which is the next bank holiday and there will be bug racing planned for that night.

You’re welcome in all the local folk clubs and they all give value for money.  At the FFFC it’s only £1 on a singaround night, £2 for a guest night.  Keep in touch on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or say hi to me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  or ianferguson0@gmail.com It’ll be good to hear from you.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 6 May 2011  and weekly news

At the Foggy Furze Folk Club, now at the Athenaeum in Church Street, Hartlepool, there are plenty of seats so why not come along.  Our next guest is Dave Gibb, who has played the FFFC before.  Dave is a Scottish singer/songwriter with a novel outlook on life, very entertaining lovely guitar player with some humorous self penned songs. Guaranteed to make you smile so get to the Athenaeum on Tuesday night, kick off 8 30, be early to claim your seat.

The Headland Folk Club is on again this evening, Friday, 6 May 2011 over at the Cosmopolitan on the Headland.  Singaround may start as early as 7pm I’m told so get there early for a seat.  MC Barrie will make you welcome as usual.

We’re advised by The Pools Folk and Acoustic Club that the excellent Martin Nesbitt is playing at the Nursery on Monday, 30 May 2011, a real Bank Holiday treat.

The Woodcutter is hosting most genially recently and we must alert you to a concert in memory of George Totty to be held on Saturday, 14 May 2011, where there will be at least four of your local groups playing as well as that new-fangled drum we seen played on Easter Saturday with great accomplishment.  Proceeds to the RNLI and tickets are £2.50.

So much folk, so little time.  Don’t forget to keep in touch with the web-site, www.foggyfurzefolk.com or speak with me at kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  Remember, on £1 on a singaround night, £2 on a guest night at the FFFC.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk, Friday, 22 April 2011

What a cracking night down at the Foggy Furze Folk Club last Tuesday, 12 April 2011.  Our guest was Martin Nesbitt who was absolutely on form with new songs and routines.  Teesside Steve called in as well and gave a great performance of two old rock standards which everyone joined in with.

The folk world was on the main stage on the 8th when a tour called to the town and featured our very own ‘Young ‘uns’.  These guys go from strength to strength, get to see them, they’re great.  Then they popped back to the Cosmopolitan to meet up with all their friends at the Headland Folk club and had a great rousing night of song and music, gossip and beer, it was a real great evening.  The Headland Folk Club is on again this Friday, 22 April 2011.

On 23 April 2011, there’s an evening to celebrate St George’s Day over at the Woodcutter pub in Kingsley Avenue.  That’s another reason to celebrate so why not pop over.  The evening is being run by Skyran.

The Nursery continues to hold it’s gatherings on a Monday, each week, so get yourself over there for a bit of a sing.

If you want to catch up on the folk scene in Hartlepool, why not look up www.foggyfurzefolk.com or get in touch with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com?  Only £1 on a singaround evening at the Atheneum when the FFFC are there on a Tuesday, each week from 8.30 pm, or £2 for a guest night.  Great fun, folking around.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, Friday, 8 April 2011

On Friday 8th there’s a party evening planned by the Headland Folk Club in the Cosmopolitan with a mining theme so if you’ve got a mining song in your repertoire, get down there.  Two weeks ago there were visitors from the Tyne down to the Humber.  But get down there early anyway or stand for the evening.

Now over at the Atheneum in Church Street, Hartlepool, the Foggy Furze Folk Club are hosting an evening with Martin Nesbitt, one of the best comic singer songwriters on the circuit at the present time.  It’s still only £2 for a guest night in the salubrious surroundings of our new home so get down there and go home with your ribs aching.  He is SO good.

We’ve heard from Skyran, who’re hosting a St George’s Evening at the Woodcutter on 23rd April 2011.  The event is free so get down there and enjoy listening to your local songbirds.  Why not spend as long celebrating England’s patron saint as you did Ireland’s patron saint?

Have fun, whatever you choose to do.

Article, Foggy Furze Folk Club, 4 March 2011

Folk comes up with some real unexpected gems on occasions, times when you just sit open-mouthed and listen enraptured.  A couple came into the Foggy Furze Folk Club last night, just popped in, they’re on a contract in the area for two days, and we were mesmerised.  Wonderful instrumentation on a quality guitar and a powerful, expressive vocal which just cries out for a stage.  They were Sue and Dave and we might never meet them again but they were magnificent.  Our guests next week are Strings ‘n’ Things, who specialise in Appalachian and American folk songs, some real Carter family classics.  It’ll be good to see them again and only £2 for the pleasure……Over at the Headland Folk Club, they have completed their first cycle of the Cosmopolitan one Friday and the Pot House two Fridays later.  You’re going to have to watch carefully so you know where they are.  Next Friday, 11th, it’s the Cosmopolitan who have to suffer the influx of instrument cases and beer-swilling folkies.            The Nursery Folk and Acoustic is back on it’s feet after the temporary hiccup so why not pop in there any Monday evening.  The next Seaton folk gathering is yet to be announced.

If you need to get in touch, please contact me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com or ianferguson0@gmail.com view the website on www.foggyfurzefolk.com/index.  That’ll give you directions to our new pad over at the Atheneum in Church Street, Hartlepool.  You’re always welcome and it’s only £1 on a singaround night, £2 on a guest night.  Pop in and see us sometime.

Loads to tell you, lots happening.

The Foggy Furze Folk Club played host for the first time in their new abode, the Atheneum Club in Church Street, Hartlepool.  Foolsgold Acoustic were an excellent trio, plenty of intriguing instruments and novel songs.  A great evening for our first guest night, thanks guys.  Our next guests at the FFFC are Strings ‘n’ Things on Tuesday, 8 March 2011, who excel in American Folk music from the Appalachian tradition.

The Headland Folk Club had it’s first night under new leadership last Friday, when Barrie Archer took over as MC.  It was full of the usual crew and people came from far and near, London, Leeds, Hartlepool itself.  A wonderful evening, enjoyed by all.

Now important news, the next session of the Headland Folk Club will take place at the Harbour of Refuge (Pot House), our previous venue.  Barrie hopes to make this a regular pattern so keep an eye out for details.

The Pools Folk and Acoustic Club has opened again at the Nursery on a Monday and Yorkie and his crew are there to welcome you each week.  Check out the Friday djembe session.

Anyway, don’t forget you’re always welcome at the FFFC and any other of the folk clubs in town.  It’s only £1 at the FFFC on a singaround night, only £2 for a guest night.  Keep in touch with us on www.foggyfurzefolk.com or myself on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.

Article, Friday, 4 February 2011

The folkie world in Hartlepool has had a couple of shifts around and one or two surprises over the last couple of weeks.

For starters, the Foggy Furze Folk Club has a new home at the Atheneum in Church Street, Hartlepool as our former residence is undergoing a refurbishment.  You can combine a perusal of the new ‘clubhouse’ with an evening listening to Foolsgold Acoustic, our next guests who appear next Tuesday, 8 February 2011. There was a lovely laid back atmosphere in the Cos last Friday when the Young Uns played host for the first time since early December.  Loads of friends from the scene were there and they will all be congregating again next Friday, 11 February 2011 so be there early or stand all night.         There was a little hiccup in continuity at the Nursery this week but the Nursery Folk and Acoustic Club will be meeting for their regular evening on Monday, 7 February 2011.  There is also a djembe drumming club being held there regularly on a Friday so get along and batter out all the week’s frustrations on a goat skin.  Very rhythmic.

If you wish to keep up with things in the folkie world you can always log into our website at www.foggyfurzefolk.com or chat with me on kay@foggyfurzefolk.com.  Remember, we’re at the Atheneum in Church Street now, we look forward to seeing you in our new abode.
